We are being unfair to climate protection by landfilling in the long term

We can give up coal power, but the rotting bio component of landfilled waste creates huge quantities of greenhouse gases. In the long term, we are being unfair to climate protection by landfilling," says former Environment Minister and now Executive Director of the Czech Association of Circular Economy, Miloš Kužvart, PhD.

Try to guess what percentage of waste produced in the country ends up in landfills without further use. Ten, twenty or even thirty percent? Few would guess that it is almost fifty percent. The remaining thirty-five percent finds a use through recycling (often outside the EU) and only seventeen percent is reused for energy purposes, for example for heating or electricity generation. EU directives will require a radical change in this ratio in just a few years. But this will not be possible without additional waste-to-energy facilities, known as WEEE for short.
